Monterey Light Moods

posted by DL Byron on October 25, 2008

More experimentation with the Kodak Zi6 and light. Shot at the Intercontinental Clement Monterey. They have an aquarium light installation in the lobby stairway. Music is Wataridori 2 by Cornelius, from the Wired CD.

From our video photostream on Flickr. We got interested in light installations and video in London.

posted by DL Byron on October 22, 2008

The closing gap between man and machine was was shown during Kevin C. Kahn’s — an Intel Senior Fellow— keynote at the Intel Developer Forum Taipei. Kevin works in Intel’s Technology Lab and talked about 40 years of innovation, showed Smart Matter, Wireless electricity, and a robots with a sense of touch. It was Intel SciFi that they’ll eventually make real.

Taipei Skateboard Ramps

posted by DL Byron on October 20, 2008

If there were skateboarders in Taipei, they would skate the ramps around this condo purchase center and get immediately banned for life.

Formosa Mixer

posted by DL Byron on October 19, 2008

I’ve been writing about the Taipei mix and that was in effect at the Taipei Blogger Party. Attendees included a local celebrity, conductor, bike maker, teachers, students, photogs, authors, and us. We talked blogs, social media, politics, and checked out Intel-powered MIDs prototypes that Pankaj Kedia, Director Global Ecosystems Programs, brought. We also gave out scwhag from Crumpler, Versus, and SXSW.

Just like I was saying about the mix in Taipei …check these rockers out. I think that’s Slash, ZZ-Top, AC/DC, and Marilyn Manson? Maybe we’ll see them out tonight after the Taipei Blogger Party.

Taipei Halloween Parade: Hello Kitty

posted by DL Byron on October 18, 2008

Totally trippy Taipei version of a Halloween parade through the Liberty Square. The parade for me represented Taipei — this crazy old, new, reinventing-itself mix. And in 08, Taipei has become a bike town. The City has spent millions of bike paths and the citizens responded by buying bikes and riding on the paths. I’ve written more about that on Bike Hugger.

IDF Day Zero

Tomorrow is Day Zero at the Intel Developer Forum Taiwan with lots of technology to blog about. I expect to see a mix of stuff like Taipei itself. We’ve got a Blogger Party, the tech showcase, interviews with the keynoters, and also just being at the event.

More Taipei from the Bike Hugger Photostream.

Modern Rome Art

posted by DL Byron on October 14, 2008

Amidst all the classic art ruins, churches, monuments, and traffic in Rome, I spotted these posters for a Jean-Michel Basquiat show at the Fondazione Memmo. The posters were plastered everywhere producing interesting contrasts. See more posters in our Dreeping set on Flickr.

Schiphol Signage

posted by DL Byron on October 06, 2008

Back in the day, in 03, us web designers talked the IC-Style, Schiphol School, and more. It was a movement towards html minimalism, simplicity — the opposite of Flash-based site and a few years before Web 2.0 with its big fonts, apps that end in "r", and AJAX whizbang.

I prefer it now as I did then

"Call it minimalist or reductionist, for us, it’s a response to the drum-solo design of the late 90s and back then we coded many drum solos."

When I travel, I judge an airport on how well it wayfinds — how I can find my way around looking at signage that Schiphol set a standard. We did find our way around well, but got confused by passport control in/out and I suspect that’s because of new requirements after 9/11.
